# Open-Cell Spray Foam Removal

Open-cell spray foam is a lower-density, softer foam often used in UK lofts. While generally easier and cheaper to remove than closed-cell, it still causes the same mortgage and ventilation issues — and needs taking out by a qualified specialist.

## How to identify open-cell foam

-   Soft and spongy when pressed
-   Off-white or pale yellow colour
-   Lower density (~8 kg/m³)
-   Often applied 100–250mm thick
-   Slightly absorbent — feels "fluffy"

## The removal process

Open-cell foam is hand-stripped using flat scrapers. Because the foam is softer it lifts more easily from rafters, with less risk to the timber. The whole job for a typical UK home takes 1–3 days.

## Why mortgage lenders still refuse open-cell

Even though open-cell is more breathable than closed-cell, UK lenders apply a blanket ban because surveyors cannot inspect the timber underneath. Removal is required to restore lending.
